The author's son's arm got stuck in a pool drain. It is not just a summertime issue; water safety is essential 365 days a year. First, pool drains should comply with drain safety laws, which we helped enact after Zachary's death. Finally, a secured pool cover that can withstand the weight of a child is another safety option. In addition to physical barriers around pools, it's vital to equip families with the skills necessary for a lifetime of water safety.

Securities and Exchange Commission Chair Gary Gensler on Tuesday refused to comment on speculation of whether Trump Media is a funding organ for Donald Trump's presidential campaign. "What's important is that their disclosures are accurate and that folks aren't in the market front-running or trading on insider information." As the majority shareholder, Trump stands to gain the largest financial boost from DJT upswings. On Friday, Trump's stake added 36 million more shares to his existing 78.8 million, due to a clause in the company's contract that unlocks bonus shares as the stock hits certain checkpoints. Given that bump, Trump's stake had a paper value of over $5 billion at Tuesday's market open.

CNN —Earth’s magnetic field plays a key role in making our planet habitable. However, Earth’s magnetic field almost collapsed 591 million years ago, and this change, paradoxically, may have played a pivotal role in the blossoming of complex life, new research has found. The discovery of the sustained weakening of Earth’s magnetic field also helped resolve an enduring geological mystery about when Earth’s solid inner core formed. Shuhai Xiao/Virginia TechUncovering the magnetic field’s near collapseThe intensity of Earth’s magnetic field is known to fluctuate over time, and crystals preserved in rock contain tiny magnetic particles that lock in a record of the intensity of Earth’s magnetic field. The research on the intensity of Earth’s magnetic field suggests that the age of Earth’s inner core is on the younger end of that timescale, solidifying after 565 million years ago and allowing Earth’s magnetic shield to bounce back.

If you were hoping interest rates might come down this spring, you're likely going to have to wait a little bit longer. After more than a decade of near-zero interest rates, savers are now in an environment where they're being rewarded for keeping deposits in the bank. And with interest rates staying at their decades-long high for longer, savers have an extended window to take advantage of everything banks are offering. "We did a study recently and found that very few people are earning even 4% on their savings," Rossman says. Now is a great time to shop around for the most favorable terms and lock in those interest rates while they're here, Rossman says.

At the same time, the 30-year fixed mortgage rate has surged from around 3% at the end of 2021 to around 7%. As a result, Yellen said that buying a first home is "almost prohibitively expensive." Prospective sellers are holding off on listing their properties because they're unwilling to give up the dirt-cheap mortgage rate they secured years ago. Shares of Linde fell on Thursday after the industrial gas giant reported mixed first-quarter results and its guidance left some investors wanting more. We're not sure of the rationale for excluding it but that explains why we're not fretting about Linde's lack of guidance raise. Guidance For the second quarter, Linde projects adjusted EPS between $3.70 and $3.80, which implies 5% to 7% year-over-year growth, excluding currency impacts. As always with Linde, the midpoint of the guidance assumes no economic improvement. For years, Wisconsin has been one of the most heavily gerrymandered states in the country, with legislative districts that overwhelmingly favored Republicans. In fact, the maps were so one-sided that, even though the state has a roughly equal share of Democrats and Republicans, Republicans were able to lock in large majorities in the State Assembly and Senate. But earlier this year, the state adopted new maps, which have significantly changed the political landscape in the state for Democrats. They are newly optimistic. So after months of hearing about President Biden’s problems motivating the Democratic base, we traveled to the critical battleground state of Wisconsin to ask: Have new maps led to new energy for Democrats, up and down the ballot?

Internal Revenue Commissioner Danny Werfel speaks during his swearing in ceremony at the IRS in Washington, D.C., on April 4, 2023. The agency also renewed its focus on "tax fairness" with plans to increase audits on the wealthiest taxpayers, large corporations and complex partnerships. The IRS aims to more than double the audit rate for the wealthiest taxpayers with total positive income of more than $10 million by tax year 2026. This would bring the audit rate for these individuals to 16.5% in 2026, compared to 11% in 2019. The agency also plans to "nearly triple audit rates" on large corporations with assets over $250 million and boost audit rates "by tenfold" for large, complex partnerships with assets over $10 million, Werfel said.

Investors can lock in some juicy real yields with Treasury inflation-protected securities, according to UBS. "The result has been rising real yields further out the curve, offering the opportunity to lock in attractive real yields ahead of expected falling nominal yields later this year," she added. Treasury yields are expected to decline when the Federal Reserve starts reducing the fed funds rate. Nominal yields have been rising as the market reassesses those interest rate expectations. "Our expectation of declining nominal yields in the second half of the year will be a tailwind to performance," she said.

“Could President Biden someday be charged with unlawfully inducing immigrants to enter the country illegally for his border policies?” the lawyer, D. John Sauer, asked. What Mr. Sauer did not mention was that Mr. Trump has done as much as anyone to escalate the prospect of threatening political rivals with prosecution. In 2016, his supporters greeted mentions of Hillary Clinton with chants of “lock her up.” In his current campaign, Mr. Trump has explicitly warned of his intent to use the legal system as a weapon of political retribution, with frequent declarations that he could go after President Biden and his family. In effect, Mr. Trump has asked the Supreme Court to enforce a norm — that in the United States, public officials do not engage in tit-for-tat political prosecutions — that he has for years threatened to shatter. In promising to sic his Justice Department on Mr. Biden, Mr. Trump has laid the grounds for the very conditions that he was asking the justices to guard against by granting him immunity.

CNN —Former President Donald Trump just landed another $1.8 billion worth of stock in the corporate owner of Truth Social. Trump Media & Technology Group disclosed the windfall for Trump in a filing Tuesday, saying the former president has received another 36 million shares in the company. That bonus, known as “earnout” shares, was triggered by the company’s share price staying above certain levels. Trump now holds an even more dominant stake in Trump Media, amounting to 114.75 million shares, or 64.9% of the total outstanding. Even though Trump Media plunged since late March, it never came close to breaching levels that would have threatened this bonus.

Films such as “What Price Hollywood” and “A Star is Born” first dabbled in the idea of famous and non-famous relations almost 100 years ago. Now, director Michael Showalter breathes new life into the trope with “The Idea of You,” out on Amazon Prime May 2. But more than just a piece of starry-eyed fan-fiction, “The Idea of You” is a Bildungsroman in disguise. It was the first look Hathaway tried on during fittings with Demetrio in New York. Higher interest rates may be here to stay for a while longer, thanks to persistent inflation. That's good news for cash savers, who have the best opportunity to earn returns on their money in 15 years. To secure today's high rates, individuals may turn to CDs, Treasury bills and Treasury Inflation-Protected Securities, or TIPs. Series I bonds — a U.S. government savings bond aimed at providing inflation protection — will pay 4.28% for the next six months, the Treasury Department announced Tuesday. Yet 67% of Americans are earning interest rates below that threshold, according to a recent Bankrate survey.
